Cover Letter

I received my B.A in Anthropology / Archaeology with a minor in Statistics from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 2004, while working full time at the St. Paul Hotel as a valet and shift supervisor. During this time I completed two Anthropology / Archaeology field schools – first in Achill Island, Co. Mayo, Ireland and the second in Pompeii, Italy. With the National University of Ireland, Galway through the Achill Field School (AFS) I received hands-on training in modern rural archaeological excavation and landscape survey techniques, historic and pre-historic site identification, period specific material culture and immersion experience with the culture, history and archaeology of both Ireland and mainland western Europe. With Bradford University, England through the Anglo-American Pompeii Project (AAPP) I received hands-on training in modern urban archaeological excavation and architectural survey techniques, historic and pre-historic site / stratigraphic deposit identification, period specific material culture and immersion experience with the culture, history and archaeology of Italy and ancient Rome. My senior thesis paper focused on the important relationship between archaeology / anthropology and the acquisition and use of statistical data in testing empirical theory.

Immediately following graduation I was hired by the Great Lakes Archaeological Research Centre (GLARC) based in Milwaukee beginning a 10+ year career as an archaeologist throughout the Great Lakes and Northern Plains regions of the United States. With GLARC and eventually Commonwealth Cultural Resource Group (CCRG) I progressed from field / lab technician, crew chief, crew leader and project archaeologist to researcher, co-author, inter-agency field communications lead and field director. In 2005, I was hired by the Pompeii Archaeological Research Project: Porta Stabia (A Michigan, Cincinnati and Stanford University collaborative effort) as a Project Assistant in support of this collaborative field school and research project. During this time I was involved in every aspect of this project from administration, logistics, support staff for excavations, survey and post excavation artifact and data analysis. Throughout my time with PARP:PS I was also conducting personal research and fieldwork gathering data for my M.A. thesis. Also in 2005, I began working closely with the Achill Field School supporting the general research, excavation and teaching regime undertaken by the field school as well as directed an upland landscape survey component of the program which lead to the discovery, survey, excavation and documentation of several previously unidentified prehistoric archaeological sites located on Achill Island, Ireland (2005-12).

In 2006, I was accepted to Boston University’s Archaeology Department pursuing an M.A. degree in Mediterranean archaeology focusing on my work in Pompeii, Italy. Over the course of the next three years I completed all the necessary course work required by the department while continuing my work in the U.S., Ireland and Pompeii. In 2009, my mother (back in Minnesota) unfortunately fell very ill and I returned home from Boston to become her primary care giver while I finished my theses in absentia from Boston University. My mother’s health and her affairs quickly took a turn for the worse and I was consumed by my responsibilities to her and my family – I regrettably have not yet submitted my thesis but I do still have the opportunity to submit / defend my thesis and in turn receive my degree from Boston University. Since returning home I have remained very active in my field and have completed many projects in the upper-Midwest (MN, ND, SD, WI, MI, IL and MA) at all phases of archaeological mitigation, research and reporting, as well as continued my work in Ireland and Italy. Over the course of the last three years my mother’s health has taken a significant turn for the worse and she is now in long term care in New Hope, MN. With my care giving obligations significantly decreased but my need to stay close to Minnesota increased I am now seeking local employment in a related field that allows me to be geographically close for my mother. With the bittersweet free time I now have I also plan to either submit my theses to BU or more likely, given the circumstances, transfer to the University of Minnesota entering a PhD program within the anthropology department at either the Twin Cities or Duluth Campus. I am currently continuing my education pursuing recertification in Microsoft Office Suit, Google Educator level 1 certification and studying for my low-voltage certification in the state of Minnesota.

I am confident that I would excel at any task placed before me from office or field sales / representative, product development, shipping and receiving or production line and am eager to work locally. I enjoy physical work and I’ve been told that I am an excellent presenter and public speaker. I am also very adept with many forms of data management applications / platforms and enjoy working with large, complicated database systems. I am very self-motivated and capable of working alone, as part of a team, leading a small 5-10 team of personnel or managing large crews of 10-80 personnel working to complete large scale, multifaceted projects. If hired I am confident that you will find me to be a loyal, kind, responsive, adaptable and skilful employee that will strive to excel at any task placed before me.

Thank you for your time, Johnathon R. Bennett
